As the warmer months approach, many people look forward to taking their workouts outdoors or increasing their training intensity. While exercising in the heat can be invigorating and refreshing, it also brings risks that are easy to overlook. Staying hydrated and adapting your exercise routine to the heat are crucial steps to protect your health and maintain performance. At Holistic Motion PT, we specialise in outdoor training and we want to remind you how important hydration is during warm weather training and share practical tips to keep you safe and energized.

Why Hydration Matters More When It’s Hot

When you exercise, your body temperature rises. To cool down, you sweat, losing water and electrolytes. In hot weather, sweating increases significantly, which can quickly lead to dehydration if you don’t replace fluids. Dehydration reduces your ability to regulate body temperature, causes fatigue, and impairs muscle function. This can lead to poor workout performance and increase the risk of heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion or heatstroke.

Research shows that even mild dehydration (losing 2% of your body weight in fluids) can reduce endurance, strength, and concentration.

Signs You Need to Stop and Hydrate

Recognizing when your body is struggling with heat is vital. Stop exercising immediately if you experience any of these symptoms:

  • Dizziness or light-headedness

  • Headache

  • Excessive sweating or suddenly stopping sweating

  • Muscle cramps

  • Nausea or vomiting

  • Rapid heartbeat or breathing

  • Confusion or difficulty focusing

If symptoms worsen or you suspect heatstroke, seek medical help immediately. During training with Holistic Motion PT, we look out and monitor for any of these signs, and know when to stop you so you can hydrate!

How to Stay Hydrated During Exercise

Here are practical hydration tips to keep you safe and performing well in the heat:

  • Drink water before, during, and after exercise. Start hydrating at least 2 hours before your workout. Sip water regularly during your session, aiming for about 7-10 ounces every 10-20 minutes. After exercise, replenish lost fluids based on your sweat rate.

  • Use electrolyte drinks for longer or intense workouts. When exercising over an hour or sweating heavily, drinks with sodium, potassium, and magnesium help replace lost minerals.

  • Avoid alcohol and caffeine before workouts. These can increase dehydration risk.

  • Wear lightweight, breathable clothing. Light colors reflect heat and moisture-wicking fabrics help sweat evaporate.

  • Plan workouts during cooler parts of the day. Early mornings or evenings reduce heat exposure- we train with clients from the early hours right up to the evenings!

  • Listen to your body. If you feel thirsty, tired, or dizzy, take a break and hydrate. If at any point when your'e training with us and you need a break- just let us know and we can break!

Exercises That Work Well in the Heat

Not all workouts need to be high intensity or long duration to be effective. Here are some exercise ideas that can be adapted for hot weather:

  • Walking or jogging at a slower pace. Keep intensity moderate and take breaks in shaded areas.

  • Swimming or water aerobics. Water cools your body and reduces heat stress- if you want us to pop together a training programme for this, we can put this together for you to use at your own pace in your own time.

  • Yoga or stretching outdoors. Choose shaded spots and focus on breath control.

  • Strength training with lighter weights and more repetitions. This reduces excessive sweating and overheating.

At Holistic Motion PT, we customize training programs to fit your environment and goals. Whether you want to train safely outdoors or need guidance on adjusting your routine for heat, we can help.
